The following contains spoilers from the Hawk Eye Finale of the first season “So it’s Christmas? »On Disney +
There was a lot to look forward to before this first season finale began. We already knew that of Vincent D’Onofrio daredevil the villainous and keeper of Echo, Kingpin, would make a big appearance. Plus, Yelena (Florence Pugh) was finally going to go after her sister Natasha’s supposed murderer (she was told), Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner).
However, it was the cameo from a Rolex watch that was the biggest scene thief in Hawk Eyeend of season.
After several punching scenes and a few jumps out of the old RCA building at Rockefeller Center (an unintended publicity for rival Disney NBC Comcast HQ), Hawk Eye ends tonight with Clint coming home from the family farm for Christmas with Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) in tow. Sitting with this woman, Laura Barton (Linda Cardellini), he tells her “You will never guess what was found at a black market auction in New York”, before handing her a Rolex bearing the Agents logo. of SHIELD and number 19 on it. The watch was one of the items recovered from the ruins of the Avengers compound and auctioned along with Ronin’s costume and sword.
Laura breathes, nods slightly, says “Thank you” taking the watch.
“I want you to take better care of your business,” Clint said to Laura.
“You’re not the type to talk,” she told him.
And right there in the final moments of the episode, it seemed like the most seismic cliffhanger in Hawk Eye: What is this watch for and who exactly is Laura Barton? There is a lot of speculation that she was a SHIELD agent known as Mockingbird, who in the comics is in love with Hawkeye. Tonight’s watch indicates that she was definitely a member of Agent Coulson’s troop. Some even speculated tonight that the watch could play with time travel and that Clint was going to use it to get home for the holidays, further tearing the multiverse continuum apart, a conundrum that unfolded in Disney +. / Marvel’s Loki and more recently at Sony / Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Path Home. This does not happen. Still, we don’t know what the watch is hiding, what secrets it contains, and why it belongs to Laura. Was it originally owned by Tony Stark and Nick Fury? We know the Rolex has a transmitter that Laura uses to locate the device in Maya’s apartment in Episode 4. Echo would be the follow-up series of Hawk Eye, So we don’t know if the deaf superhero will go wild looking for the watch at Barton Farm.
Speaking of Echo, she eventually comes face to face with the guy who killed her father, Kingpin. She shoots the gun and we assume she kills it – but her death is offscreen. As we saw a number of times in tonight’s episode, he’s a pretty invincible guy: he survived a crash by a car driven by Kate’s mom, Eleanor (Vera Farmiga), as well as to a huge explosion of rigged arrows, which Kate detonates. Not to mention that when she shoots arrows at him, she can’t knock the big guy down.
The whole set up of tonight’s episode written by Jonathan Igla and Elisa Lomnitz Climent is that Eleanor is trying to break up doing business with Kingpin; she had already paid off her late husband’s debt. Kingpin can’t get her and Kazi tries to snip her at a Christmas party, which Kate and Clint are already aware of; the latter eventually stopping Kazi with a rigged arrow full of gas.
Outside of Kingpin, there’s more blood on Echo’s hands before she stars in her own spinoff series: she stabs BF Kazi with an arrow after an intense discussion where he tells her he’s staying in the game. Kingpin team. âI cannot walk in both worlds,â he told her.
Another of tonight’s make-goods, which many knew would debut in the epilogue of Black Widow, was Yelena’s tiff with Clint. She wanted to believe that he was responsible for the death of her sister, which was first told to her by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). Yelena’s mission tonight was to finally kill him, and they have several laps on the Rockefeller Center ice rink.
“Your sister sacrificed herself and saved the world,” Clint tries to tell Yelena who refuses to believe him.
It’s only when Clint blows Natasha’s whistle that Yelena pauses. How did Clint know about this? He tells Yelena that Natasha talked about her all the time. âShe told me how you got separated when you were kids, she was flying this plane,â he says. It is at this point, through sobs, that Yelena accepts Clint’s confession and sincerity. “You have so much time with her⦠It shouldn’t have been like this.” If I was there I could have changed it, âYelena told Clint.
“She made her choice,” Clint told Yelena of her sister’s sacrifice, “We’re going to have to find a way to live with this.”
Yelena offers her hand to Clint on the ice and pulls him up. âI’m sorry,â he told her. Yelena walks away. Don’t worry, she’ll be back: as we said earlier in the episode between their jokes and their fights, Kate Bishop and Yelena are bound to be the next Cagney and Lacey or Thelma and Louise.
Where do we go from here? As we’ve always known, it all led to Clint bestowing the Hawkeye title on Kate, which he further emphasizes by burning her outfit at the end of the episode.
But it looks like the complexity with Kate going forward will always lie with her corrupt mother. Kate says categorically, “It was never normal, Mom.” Kate is having trouble with her mother killing Armand, hiring an assassin to take out Clint, and setting up her fiancé, Jack (Tony Dalton). Eleanor’s excuse is that she was protecting Kate and had to take responsibility for cleaning things up. Eleanor is then arrested by the cops for the murder of Armand.
“Are the heroes doing this?” Eleanor moaned to Kate, “Stopping their mothers on Christmas?” “
After the Spider-Man: No Path Home epilogues gave us a lot of MCU clues like we did in 2022, Hawk Eye‘s tonight hasn’t revealed anything about what’s to come for season 2 or even Echo. It was simply Captain America’s “Save the City” musical number, Rogers: The Musical, that Clint was watching with his kids in episode one. It wouldn’t be shocking if this ever became a reality; Marvel having previously tried and failed to bring a Captain American musical to Broadway in 1985.
